I can’t find a burial record - what can I do?
Firstly, check the above list of what burial records are available on Buried in Fingal.
If the burial occurred between those dates and is still missing, try searching by surname alone as sometimes burials were recorded with ‘Mrs’ or ‘Baby’ as the first name. If you still can’t locate the missing record, contact us at archives@fingal.ie.
Please note that the records from St. Fintan’s Lawn Cemetery stop in September 1997. These records were not scanned and so are not in the Buried in Fingal database. They are, however, held by Fingal County Council’s Burials Section who can be contacted at HowMalOpArea@fingal.ie or (01) 890 5000.
If you are looking for a more recent burial which took place after the above dates, contact Fingal County Council’s Burials Section who have responsibility for the management of the burial grounds at HowMalOpArea@fingal.ie or (01) 890 5000.
If the burial took place before burial records were available, check the resources listed on the individual webpage for that graveyard. This will indicate any resources for headstone transcriptions such as Michael J. Egan’s Memorials of the Dead, Dublin City and County and the Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead. Both these works are available in Fingal Local Studies & Archives. Otherwise, there are many useful websites with headstone transcriptions for Dublin burial places including Find a Grave, Irish Genealogy Project, interment.net, and Historic Graves.

There is a mistake in a burial record - what can I do?
If there is a mistake in the original burial register, please contact Fingal County Council’s Burials Section at HowMalOpArea@fingal.ie or (01) 890 5000. It should be noted that it may not be possible to correct mistakes in the original burial registers. Mistakes can be corrected in the database held by the Burials Section and in the database on Buried in Fingal.

Where can I get a plan or map of a burial ground?
The plans and maps available on Buried in Fingal tend to date back to when many older graveyards were enlarged by the Dublin Board of Public Health in the 1930s-1940s. Where burial ground maps/plans are available, they are included at the end of the relevate interment book PDF which are available on the Downloads and Flipbooks page.

There’s no burial record and no headstone transcription - what do I do?
There are many cases where you know someone was buried in a particular cemetery but there are no existing burial records, no existing grave marker and the grave cannot be found on lists of headstone transcriptions. It was very common not to have a headstone due to cost and wooden or metal grave markers may have eroded over time due to weather damage etc. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to trace where these graves might be located.
Are you going to add burials after 2013?
At present, there are no plans to continue to add burials to the website as it was always intended as a resource for historical records. This position may be reviewed in time.
Fingal Archives is responsible for the digitised copies of the registers. An outside contractor, Kaelleon Design, was hired to read the scans of the hand-written registers, and type the entries into a database which was then linked to the original page. The level of accuracy in the database is extremely high, but with details of over 69,000 people recorded, there will be a few errors.
